Pizza Hut - New Health Check Options

The Eat Well Menu at Pizza Hut is brand new, and Canadians are the first to get a taste of the delicious options that have the Health Check seal of approval. As a Canadian, I'm sure you have seen the Health Check seal on items but do you know what it means?

Health Check is one way the Heart and Stroke Foundation helps Canadians make healthy choices. All Health Check items meet nutrient criteria developed by the Foundation’s registered dietitians based on recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide. Health Check works directly with food companies and restaurants to improve the food supply by challenging them to meet stronger nutrient criteria and offer Canadians more healthy choices. Health Check is the only non-profit, independent, and neutral food information program in the country. The new menu items include 4 new multi grain pizzas and 2 multi grain pasta dishes. Canadians can now choose from a Grilled Chicken Arrabiatta, Giardino Fresco, Grilled Chicken Rustico or Margherita Pizza (they all sound so delicious, no?) or a Tuscani Mediterranean Vegetable or Tuscani Mediterranean con Pollo pasta.

Coincidentally, the same week I received an email about the new Eat Well Menu at Pizza Hut, I received a flyer like the one above in the mail. I had to smirk at the clever advertising. The creators of the new menu know that multi grain products can literally leave a bad taste in your mouth and it can be hard to entice people, like me, who won't order a multi grain product as a first choice.

I was sent a gift card to try out some of the new menu items from Pizza Hut. We ordered the Grilled Chicken Arrabiatta Pizza on a multi grain crust for dinner last night. Before I ordered, I went online to check out the allergy info and discovered that the multi grain crust may have come into contact with egg products (it's the only crust that Pizza Hut makes that may, all the others are egg-free). I opted to order a second, smaller pizza, for the kids (and it's a good thing I did, you'll see why!)


The red pepper flakes on this pizza are spicy spicy spicy! Combined with the grilled chicken strips, roasted red peppers, green peppers, red onions and the marinated tomato slices the result is a delicious feisty combo (perfect don't you think?!) The thing is, the pizza was so spicy and delicious that I didn't even notice that the crust was multi grain - the entire pizza was perfecto (it's a good thing I ordered a smaller pizza for the kids because of the spicy red pepper flakes on this one though)!

Take a look at the Health Check profile. 2 slices of this pizza have a total of 9.8 grams of fat. I compared it to my favorite Pizza Hut pizza, the Triple Crown, and that pizza has 9.0 grams of fat per slice! Wow! I'd much rather eat 2 slices of the Grilled Chicken Arabiatta pizza for almost the same amount of fat.1 have $25 Pizza Hut gift cards set aside to give to 2 of my Canadian readers!
